Jeff Thomson, Malcolm Marshall, Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar, Shaun Tate; add in the names of all the greatest of fast bowlers in cricketing history and they all have one clever lady to thank. Her name is Christina Willes - the mother of round-arm bowling!
When bowling was an action performed by bowlers with an underarm throw in the late 1700s, the English woman came up with the round-arm action for bowling as a result of finding ways to avoid her skirt obstructing her underarm action. The round-arm bowling style stuck on and became a rage because of the kind of motion and pace it offered!
You may wonder how she chanced upon this brilliant move. Our guess? The idea struck her over a glass of beer at an old English pub, when she was having the Good Times!
