Korean Grand Prix – Qualifying Review

Korean GP – Qualifying: Front Row Lockout for Red Bull
By Armaan Ebrahim

With the 6th pole position this season, there is no stopping Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull this season and for the past 3 seasons where he has dominated the sport like only the German compatriot Michael Schumacher has. The Koran Grand Prix offers a lot of thrills at hand as the Saubers with a top 10 qualifying, look to be the one that may spoil the party of the title contenders. The Sahara Force India have looked a bit edgy when it comes to the pace. Hopefully they have a better race than the Saturday's qualifiers.

Qualifying as it stands:

Red Bull

Sebastian Vettel – P1

Mark Webber – P3

Continuing his form this season and over the last few races, Vettel proved why he is the best in the business these days as he pipped Hamilton for the pole position. It will be hard to hold him back on the race day as his teammate, Webber also had a great run and finished 3rd on the grid. However due to the grid penalty he received in Singapore he will start the race ten places behind this and start the race at the 13th slot on the track.

Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton – P2

Nico Rosberg – P5

Hamilton did no wrong in the qualifying and drove magnificently, only to be undone by the Red Bull car of Vettel's, to finish 2nd on the pole. He would be hoping for a perfect start to put pressure on Vettel from the word go. Meanwhile, Rosberg struggled a bit with the car's balance and will be hoping that the car could improve a bit for the race.

Lotus

Romain Grosjean – P4

Kimi Raikkonen – P10

Grosjean would be satisfied of his performance today as he managed a good practice and qualifying session and will start on the cleaner part of the track on the race day. Kimi on the other hand didn't finish the qualifiers as he would have liked to due to his car's under-steering and tyre degradation and managed to finish the qualifying just within the top ten places on the grid.

Ferrari

Fernando Alonso – P6

Felipe Massa – P7

The red fury of the Ferraris has been struggling this season on the Saturdays as the Red Bulls and the Mercedes have been faster than them in all the departments. However, with Alonso's driving skills and their race performances, Sunday could be a different story for them as they can still hope to finish on the podium and extract as many points as possible to keep them in the hunt. Massa who has a tough season thus far will be hoping to finish in the top 5 in the Korean GP.

Sauber

Nico Hulkenberg – P8

Esteban Gutierrez – P9

The team that worked together like a team and managed to deliver at the Korean GP qualifiers has to be team Sauber. Both Hulkenberg and Gutierrez looked comfortable on the long runs and the communication between the team looks solid. They are surely the drivers who can cause some upsets tomorrow.

Sahara Force India

Adrian Sutil – P14

Paul Di Resta – P15

A disappointing day at office for the Sahara Force India team as Sutil missed the cut for Q3 by a whisker and Di Resta struggled with his car throughout the qualifying session. On the positives, the tyres look fresh for the race day and they start at the cleaner side of the grid. They have got enough talent behind the wheels and enough firepower in their cars that coupled with a good strategy can help both the drivers finish amongst the points.

Even though the Red Bulls and the Mercedes look the favorite to finish on the podium, there is a good chance that Lotus and the Ferraris will spoil their party. Also, watch out for the Saubers who may be the dark horses for the extremely exciting Korean GP tomorrow.
